Paterson

The Film

Paterson · Jim Jarmusch · 2016

My Take

I really enjoyed Paterson. What stood out to me most was Paterson’s ability to find something deeply meaningful within what appears to be mundane. The small “signs” he notices throughout his day—the things most people would probably overlook—become poetic in his eyes. It almost feels as though the world around him is quietly responding to him.

His poetry gives those ordinary moments meaning, but when Marvin destroys his notebook, it feels like more than losing a collection of poems. It’s the loss of something that brought life and meaning to his days outside of his love for Laura. For a moment, it seems as though something essential has been taken from him.

But the film ultimately reminds us that the notebook was never what made Paterson a poet. The gentleman in the park gives him a new notebook, but more importantly, he reminds Paterson that he can begin again. Paterson is a poet. It isn't simply something he does; it's part of who he is.

What Stayed With Me

You don't lose who you are simply because you lose what you've created.

Paterson's poems could be destroyed, but his ability to notice, create, and find beauty remained. The blank notebook wasn't an ending—it was an invitation to begin again.

The Chapter

Paterson feels deeply aligned with the idea of The Curated Chapter: that a meaningful life is often found not in extraordinary experiences, but in learning to see the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Paterson pays attention. He notices what is around him, gives meaning to it, and allows those small moments to become part of his story. His life isn't particularly dramatic, but it is deeply his own.

Perhaps that is what curation ultimately means—not creating a life that looks extraordinary from the outside, but becoming attentive enough to recognize the beauty already present within it.
