Seasonal Pieces: The Fall Edit

The Seasonal Shift

Moving into Fall, there are a few key pieces to incorporate into your look. As a reminder, your wardrobe should make sense for the season — that means paying attention to fabric weight, garment length, and color.

The Sweater: Your Essential Layer

As temperatures drop, it’s time to unfold those sweaters or take the opportunity to find new ones. The right sweater offers both comfort and sophistication. Its versatility is unmatched, serving as the perfect layering piece — and to be clear, we’re not talking about sweatshirts here.

A sweater should elevate your look. Opt for wool or cashmere, and if patterns tempt you, keep them minimal. A cable knit is a timeless choice. Whenever possible, go for solid colors.

Oxford Shirts: Quiet Versatility

Next, make sure you have a few cotton button-down oxford shirts — identifiable by the button on the collar. They pair perfectly beneath a sweater or stand confidently on their own.

These shirts carry remarkable versatility, offering both casual and slightly dressier options without feeling overdone. Choose tailored fits that flatter your frame — not too slim, and certainly not boxy. Keep patterns subtle and tones muted, but always include a classic white.

There’s a wide range of quality oxford options out there, so explore and find the brands that best match your aesthetic.

Corduroy & Wool: Grounding the Look

Once your top layers are set, it’s time to think about what anchors the look — your trousers. Take my advice and invest in a couple of pairs of corduroy trousers. Choose a medium to high-waisted fit with a regular cut. Avoid going too slim.

Try a pleated pair with a hemmed cuff for an elevated look, though a standard plain-front style works perfectly if that’s more your pace. Corduroy trousers are seriously underrated — stylish, comfortable, and a refreshing shift from your usual wool trousers (which you should also have on rotation).

As the season deepens, start exploring heavier-weight wools as well.

Earth Tones & Autumn Balance

When it comes to color, lean into warm earth tones. Gradually pull away from brighter summer hues as your foundation. Earth tones make pairing easier and feel effortlessly appropriate for the season.

Unless your personality naturally leans bold, it’s best to keep things mellow: dark green, navy, charcoal, burgundy, and black are your go-to palette this time of year.

Finishing Touches

For the finishing touches, consider accessories that complete your look. Scarves, for instance, add both function and flair — especially layered over a sweater and oxford. Here, you can play a bit more with pattern and texture, just be mindful to avoid clashing. Successfully pulling off a scarf says a lot about your sense of style — all good things.

It’s also the perfect time to rotate your fragrances. Retire the lighter summer scents and explore richer, deeper notes that complement the season.

And finally, when the weather calls for it, bring out the topcoat. Few pieces deliver timeless impact quite like it. Stick to darker tones — charcoal, navy, or black — and choose patterns sparingly to ensure it works with the rest of your wardrobe.

A Note on Authenticity

As always, don’t overthink it. The key is authenticity — reflecting who you are through what you wear. Think of these as foundations, not limitations. Build, experiment, and evolve from here.

With these essentials in place, you’ll move through Fall with effortless confidence — and more than a few compliments along the way.
