Moments of Reflection
Never pausing to reflect on where you are in life is like getting behind the wheel of a car and driving with your eyes closed. It’s dangerous. Your hands may be on the wheel and you may think you know where you’re headed, but in truth, you have no awareness of where you are or where you are going. The truth is that this is how you move throughout your day without you even realizing it. You aren’t really moving with the control that you assume you have. Just because you are behind the wheel doesn’t mean that you are in control of the vehicle. You have to be presently aware. The key word here is be. Be present. Be aware. Be still. Reflect.
The moment you decide to pause to reflect on the self is the moment your eyes become opened. Okay, now you can clearly see where you are and all that is going on around you. You can begin to ask yourself the important questions. “Where am I?” “Where am I going?” “Am I okay with where I am?” This is an incredibly important place to be. For now, do not go beyond this point. Open your eyes; read the signs; view the map that shows you where you are. Is this where you would like to be? Do you understand how you got here? You observe so many random things around you throughout your day, but there will never be anything more important to observe than yourself.
The reason that self-reflection is so vital is because it allows you to run a full scan to check on yourself. During moments of reflection you have to be absolutely true to what you're feeling, what you're thinking, and what needs to happen next. No one will ever check on you that way that you can check on yourself. Ever. You can always be available for yourself if you choose to. Your check-ins may need to come on a frequent basis during periods where someone whom you rely on may not be available at the time. You can’t act on the unknown. Reflection is the period of discovery.
Avoid being cruel to yourself during reflection, but be real. Face yourself honestly. Solutions remain hidden to problems that remain covered. You may find yourself, at times, wandering around aimlessly looking for an answer to something that feels off within. You may not know what that thing is or how to fill that void. You search for something; an answer, but nothing ever quite connects. The reason is because you are still trying to move when the key is to be still. The answer may already be right there with you. How would you know if your search is everywhere outside of yourself? Your goal is to become better. Whatever that means to you, make it your priority. You can only accomplish this by checking in with yourself. Give yourself time-frames to do so; schedule it if you have to. Stop drifting through life and finally become fully in-tune to what’s going on, where you are, and where you’re headed
